Enhancing the accuracy and scope of trace isotope analysis

The name NAUTILUS stands for NAval Ultra-Trace Isotope Laboratory Universal Spectrometer. NAUTILUS combines secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) and single-stage accelerator mass spectrometry (SSAMS) into a single unified instrument that allows for specially resolved trace elements and isotope analysis. The NAUTILUS instrument is essentially a fully functional SIMS instrument with an additional molecule filtering detector, the SSAMS. The latter can accept both positive and negative ions, making it a very versatile mass spectrometer. ND plans to set-up NAUTILUS as a university-wide facility with access to outside research groups or projects.

Learn more about the history of and possibilities for NAUTILUS, which was transferred to Notre Dame from the United States Navy. Beyond providing measurement capabilities for research in atomic mass spectrometry, NAUTILUS fosters collaborative research opportunities.
